Subtext is a non-profit specialising in misinformation, rights and educational and media literacy. We go beyond the headlines and cut through the noise of misinformation in the UK, the US and Europe.

Through our journalism and research, we hold those in power accountable and amplify the voices of marginalised communities. As a non-profit, we are driven to improve media literacy and human rights education.

We publish explainers, interactive content and investigations surrounding misinformation, human rights and social issues. Our journalism is fact-based and rigorous.

Meet the team

Introducing the team behind Subtext.

Emma Guy, Executive Director – Editorial and Operations

Emma Guy, Executive Director – Editorial and Operations.

I was honoured to receive The Georgina Henry Award 2025 for Subtext. Since then, I've been working in the background setting up Subtext alongside my campaigning work. I have a background in human rights reporting and previously ran at EachOther and The Leicester Gazette. I have an MA in Investigative journalism from De Montfort University and Channel 4 and recently paused my PhD in human rights law to focus on Subtext.

I have previously worked with Tribune, The Canary, have worked with BBC Three and guest lectured at Goldsmiths University, London. My work has been featured on Times Radio and the Guardian. I also co-produced a 5x award-winning podcast called Less than 2%, which lifted the lid on rape conviction rates in the UK.

Before I could write, I told stories. This passion is a central thread linking my personal and professional selves, shaping my values and guiding my decisions. It led me to pursue degrees in film and creative writing, become a professional marketer, co-launch a newspaper, and embark on a PhD. My research into misinformation in the media has since opened my eyes to the inner workings of our social and political systems. Now, I tell stories that question our perceptions and challenge our prejudice.

I am a reporter and feature writer focusing on politics and culture, with bylines in the Leicester Gazette. Previously, I worked in press relations for a range of campaigns, covering everything from AI legislation to press reform to the environment. My work has been mentioned in the Independent, QueerAF, and Private Eye. I also love print media and write for an indie art magazine.
